Environmentally friendly sunscreens

What would a holiday be without the sun? One of the key elements every traveler thinks of when planning a trip, is bringing sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburning. However, the sunscreen you use may be protecting you but do harm to the planet. For this blog I did some research and compiled a list with eco-friendly sunscreens.

Sunscreens and coral bleaching

First of all, why are sunscreens harmful to the environment? Most regular (big brand) sunscreens contain chemical additives that washes off when taking a swim or a dive in oceans, lakes and rivers. It can leave chemical residues behind that may be harmful to marine life and coral reefs in particular.

According to this EHP study on coral bleaching, chemicals in Sunscreens cause rapid and complete bleaching of hard corals, even at extremely low concentrations. Four commonly found sunscreen ingredients can awaken dormant viruses in the algae that live inside reef-building coral species. Once effected with the virus, the algae that live in the coral tissue explode or are just released by the tissue – causing damage to neighbouring corals. The coral dies and leaves nothing but a white skeleton behind, which makes the fish living in the reef disappear as well.

Coral Bleaching

A site note to put the use of sunscreen into perspective: there are many big factors responsible for bleached coral – global warming being the main reason. But if we are going to enjoy the wonderful underwater world anyway, why would we not take good care of it ourselves? Every little step counts!
